In case you haven’t noticed yet, Overwatch is a pretty kickass game. From the characters to the maps to the overall gameplay, you’d be hard-pressed to find something to dislike about the game (okay, maybe the competitive ranked system). But seriously, Overwatch is amazing, and it’s proving to be quite a hit for Activision-Blizzard.
In April 2017, Blizzard reported a player base of 30 million. That number has likely grown since then.
Overwatch smashed the sales charts back in June 2016, becoming the best-selling title of the month. A year later, it remains in the top 10. As NPD Group notes this evening, for June 2017, Overwatch was the #8 best-selling title — an incredible feat considering the competition.
Anyone familiar with the gaming industry knows how difficult it can be to stay on top. Everyone’s always looking for the next big game. It’s pretty amazing that a year after its launch, players are still discovering the awesomeness of Overwatch.
I’m sure Activision-Blizzard are pretty happy too. In the company’s Q1 2017 earnings report, it was revealed that Overwatch revenues had exceeded one billion dollars, making it just the eighth such property owned by the company to do so. With sales continuing to pour in and Blizzard continuing to offer limited timed events (which presumably lead to in-game microtransactions), it’ll be interesting to see how profitable Overwatch still is for Activision-Blizzard.
